• Synopsis
Happy Together is a hugely successful melodrama that tells the heart-wrenching story of five siblings whose lives are irrevocably
changed by the tragic death of their parents. Tae Poong is a professional baseball player, who just so happens to be one of the orphaned children,
now all grown-up. It seems three of the children were taken away, but for some reason, Suh Tae Poong and his younger sister were left behind.
Due to Tae Poong's young age, his little sister had to be given up for adoption. Ever since, the kind-hearted Tae Poong has longed to bring the
family back together, searching his whole life for his brother and three sisters. However, the reunion won't be quite what he expected!

Viewers still remember 'Happy Together' for having the finest cast ever assembled in K-drama history. The show was full of top stars including Lee Byung Hun,
Kim Ha Neul, Song Seung Hun, Cha Tae Hyun, Han Go Eun, Jeon Ji Hyun, Cho Jae Hyun and more. Needless to say, this stellar cast was only possible because these
actors were not as famous back then. If any director tried to cast each and every one of theses stars now to produce one show, how much would it cost? It seems
impossible that they cast so many top actors in one show, and one has no question how that happened.
Casting The Hottest New Faces
The story was about 5 siblings with the same father or the same mother, played by Cho Min Soo, Lee Byung Hun, Song Seung Hun, Kang Sung Yeon and Jeon Ji Hyun.
They grow up separately and meet again later in life. The storyline, editing techniques and overall quality of the drama earned them the number 1 ratings slot. Many viewers
still remember the little grungy corner house where Lee Byung Hun and his illegitimate son lived with his older sister. Cho Min-Soo. It showed their life in a sentimental way
and touched viewers hearts.
The show was not just limited to the sad life stories of the five. There was plenty of laughter and heartwarming love, as well as tears and heartache. It was filled with Lee
Byung Hun's cool slicked back hair, and the humorous fight sequences between thugs Cho Jae Hyun and Cha Tae Hyun. Their director Oh Jong Rok is still famous for spotting
actors with great potential. He cast new face Jeon Ji Hyun, who has since become one of Asia's top stars. 'Happy Together' won her much media attention and since
then she has been focusing only on films. She played an amateur rock singer whose part time job was a counter sales person at a local ice cream store. Her girlish smile with
the cute ice cream store uniform is still remembered by many. Director Oh had to spend hours convincing Kim Ha Neul when casting her, but during the shoot he was just as
harsh on Kim as he was on everyone else.
Oh Jong Rok, the renowned director of 'Happy Together' is just as famous for his talent of finding new faces as he is for his career as a director. In 2000, there was
'Juliet's Man' followed by 'Piano' in 2001, in which he cast many rising stars. In 'Juliet's Man', he hired Ji Jin Hee who was a complete unknown at
the time. He would often criticize Ji for not being able to deliver what the director was asking of him. One everning, Ji Jin Hee had one too many drinks and yelled at Oh.
"Why did you hire a newcomer like me when you wanted someone who would know exactly what to do! This is my first time, cut me some slack! I will do better next time.'
And he became one of the biggest stars in Asia within a few years. Oh's philosophy is hiring new actors succeeded with his soap operas. Kim Min Hee, Ye Ji Won and Cha
Tae Hyun are just a few of the numerous actors that he discovered. In SBS 'Piano', he again scored a ratings victory by casting new actors including Go Soo, Kim
Ha Neul and Jo In Sung, all of whom earned great reputations from the show. His gutsy decisions to hire new actors for all his lead roles distinguished Oh as a pioneer in drama
production. Is the SBS drama 'My Girl' another example of 'Happy Together's success? Thanks to its cast of talented new faces, 'My Girl' looks to be generating the same audience
excitement as 'Happy Together' once did.
